Tips for Hosting a One-Mile Fun Run at School

  • Schedule your Fun Run between April 20, 2022 – May 6, 2022. The Fun Run can be held after school, on the weekend, or during regularly scheduled P.E. classes. The Fun Run should not be combined with any other school fundraisers or race events. Schools have the discretion to host a small or large-scale event.

  • Designate a one-mile course. The Fun Run can be in a gymnasium, on a track or other safe location with a hard surface such as pavement or a soft surface like grass. The ideal location should be easy to monitor, have no traffic or road crossings, and clear of obstructions. Make sure the course is well marked with cones or arrows.

  • Timing is not required for the Fun Run. Schools may opt to time their event if they have the resources.

  • After the Fun Run, School Coordinators will submit the Runners Log to verify students completing the Fun Run and 3-5 photos of their Fun Run event. Upon the submission of the Runners Log and photos, medals will be provided to School Coordinators for distribution.

  • Control the flow of the event by staggering your start time. If the course is narrow with a limited capacity or being conducted inside in a gymnasium, start runners in groups of 8-10. If the Fun Run is outside, stagger runners in groups of 15-20.

  • Remind students to bring water bottles or provide water for students after they cross the finish line.

  • Recruit parents or high school students to serve as volunteers/course marshals. Course marshals watch for safety issues and cheer and encourage the runners to complete the Fun Run.

  • Develop a safety plan. As with P.E. class or any group activity, it's a good idea to be prepared. Ensure you have access to a first aid kit for minor injuries.

  • Create excitement and encourage students to register for the Fun Run. All students can participate in the Fun Run; however, only registered students will receive a race t-shirt and medal.

  • School Coordinators who have a minimum of 10% of their school's enrolled students register for the race and submit the Student Participation Check-in form will receive a special coaches t-shirt to wear to the Fun Run.

  • Awards will be given to the top three schools in each region that have the highest number of students to cross the finish line.

  • Have Fun! Celebrate your Fun Run event by posting pictures on social media using the hashtag - #GR2RMS, for the chance to be featured on the Get Ready to Run website photo gallery!
